Tennant over time
Fashion has
alot to do with one's personality and confidence. Although very quick witted and cheeky now, David has not always been this way.
‘That's the nature of being a teenager. It felt awkward and ugly and different. I felt uncool to the depths of my soul and I've never really recovered from that - I still think I'm uncool’
- David, on growing up as a teenager.
But David is far from uncool now. Or at least, in the eyes of his fans.
I'll compare and contrast two quotes from two articles dated 2005 and 2008.
Firstly, in a
2005 Article, the writer has a very keen, detailed analysis of his impression of David.
‘You sense that Tennant might be something like that himself, too, if he were less conscious of being interviewed; you can see him weighing words carefully, filtering answers and self-editing in a way that suggests he is savvy enough to know that, at the level of recognition he is on the cusp of achieving, it's cleverer not to let your thoughts run away with you aloud. It's a shame, because he's clearly a great talker when he lets rip - he is at his most expansive and warmly enthusiastic when talking not about himself but about the dramatists whose work he has most enjoyed grappling with: Davies, and John Osborne (he won the Scottish Critics Award for Best Actor this year for his portrayal of Jimmy Porter at the Lyceum in Edinburgh).’
The article goes even further to briefly mention how David felt about his role of Casanova (a passionate, witty, confident lover).
‘Boyish and electric-thin, Tennant is a very modern kind of leading man. He retains a kind of undergraduate quality, and what he lacks in chiselled jaw and shoulder span he makes up for in the animation of his face and his quick intelligence. It's easy to see why smart casting directors have spotted his appeal for women in contrast to the more traditional, slab-like leading men of old.
'I didn't expect to get Casanova at all,' he says. 'When I saw the list of people up for it I thought, "Oh well, it will go to the beautiful boys."'
And that's not how you see yourself?
'I don't think I am, no. What?'’
Obviously, David doesn't really feel he quite matches the role of daring, flamboyant Casanova.
Well, let's take a look at some of his outfits in 2005.
Here David at various events (mostly formal):

As you can see, mostly safe: nothing too flamboyant or loud. He still has his trademark open collar, and at some events, a nice jacket and a screen t-shirt. Evidently, he has "trends" starting, which we will see bloom into fruition.
So what happened in between? Well, if you're well versed in Doctor Who history, 2005 was about the time he started Doctor Who. 2008 was a very successful year - having a couple television movies and big projects under his belt.
In another
2008 Article, David gives a stronger, more bold statement:
‘...David is pretty careful in all his choices. The only area in which he goes positively mad is in his choice of clothes. In fact his wardrobe can be very flamboyant, which is why those who know him quickly gave him the monicker of “metrosexual”.
In the early days many of my friends (principally male, I’ll admit), thought that he must be gay. “He has to be – you’re his best friend, and look at the way he dresses,” they’d protest.
Leaving aside the suggestion that an association with me reflects on a man’s sexuality, I had to break it to them that just because a guy wears a red velvet suit and is able to form a close friendship with a woman he isn’t sleeping with doesn’t necessarily mean he’s homosexual.
David, meanwhile, took all this teasing in his stride; he is so unmacho and fair-minded that the speculation about his sexuality never bothered him . “Why would it?” he’d say. Now, that’s what I call a real metrosexual.’
Wow! Talk about statement change

Yes. There is a definite change. I spy more color, silky, flashy, even studsy! However, one thing remains the same - the same jacket over t-shirt as seen before. Granted, this isn't the craziest clothes we've seen him in - but perhaps there is a change.
